Recommendations of John de la Salle for the Modern School with Particular Emphasis on the Authority of the Teacher

Abstract

This article presents the figure and pedagogical achievements of the founder of the Congregation of Brothers of Christian Schools, John de La Salle (1651–1719), in the context of contemporary searches for ways to build teacher authority. Much attention is devoted to the teacher model he developed and the principles of its implementation with a view to its potential use in the pedagogical workshop of a contemporary teacher. Although de La Salle's pedagogical assumptions are deeply rooted in religion, as well as in the realities of his era - it seems that many of the thoughts and principles he formulated are universal in nature and can be used in the 21st century school.

Particular attention is paid to de La Salle's recommendations regarding building teacher authority - among others, the concept of the 12 Virtues of a Good Teacher. It is thus emphasized that the pillar of Lasallian pedagogy is the teacher's authority.

The study uses the few - as indicated by the source query - Polish studies on this subject, primarily English-language studies unknown to Polish readers (source guidelines are provided - international studies on the history and contemporary thought and practice of the de La Salle schools - which could contribute to the development of Lasallian studies in Poland).
