Childhood in the Diaries of Borderland Landowners from the Collections of the National Library and the Jagiellonian Library

Abstract

The main objective of the article is an attempt to draw attention to interesting diary sources, i.e. a type of document of a direct character, which may contribute to the discussion on the place their childhood occupies in the memoirs of the borderland landowners from the beginning of the 20th century. The analysis focused on selected diaries of Polish landowners from the Eastern Borderlands, collected in the form of manuscripts in the collections of the Jagiellonian Library and the National Library. In the diaries of the landowners, who were born and raised in the Eastern Borderlands, or who were connected to this area through family ties, we can find memories of their childhood and experiences related to this period. There are reflections on: the family, its members and their educational influence, relationships with siblings and peers, home and schooling, games, toys and leisure time, or finally illness and death of loved ones. Certainly these sources are important and interesting from the point of view of research into the history of national, social and political consciousness, or from the point of view of studies on the formation of "mental types" of Poles from the various partitions.
