Maksymilian Chmielarczyk – Childhood, Youth and Private Life

Filiations and Contemporary Revisions

Abstract

The aim of the article is to disseminate unknown facts from the biography of actor Maksymilian Chmielarczyk (1891–1953), alias ‘Cybulski’, son of the forgotten artist of Warsaw’s dramatic theatres, Stanisława Aleksandra Chmielarczyk. During her research, the author found in archives manuscripts of birth and civil status certificates drawn up in Warsaw (under the Russian partition). The unique documents discovered by the researcher reveal uknown facts about Chmielarczyk’s family history and private life (from, inter alia, his childhood and youth). Based on unknown publications from the period, the author shows without mythologising the ‘lights and shadows’ of young Maksymilian’s declamation organised by Józef Cybulski’s (‘veteran actor’). In 1911, the 20-year-old Chmielarczyk married Helena Felicja Przybylska in Warsaw (a fact previously unknown) and the witness at the wedding was Józef Cybulski, whom he treated as his father and under whose name he performed on stage until 1939. The author of the article presents unknown, hidden or silent facts from the biography of the actor Chmielarczyk. The researcher also focuses her attention on the figures of women in the later periods of Chmielarczyk’s life – these were the actresses: Maria Czerniawska (ca. 1893–1931), the operetta singer and Stefania Cybulska (1910–1980), the last wife, about whom the author writes on the basis of theatrical and archival sources. In article the author presents the facts and compares them with the biographical legend created by Chmielarczyk, during the communist period, when he was the director of the Municipal Theatre in Lublin (1947–1949) and the Juliusz Osterwa State Theatre in Lublin (1949–1952).
