Grzegorz Piramowicz's ‘Service with the Pen’ and Its Influence on the Traditions of Good Education and Educational Axiology – in the Perspective of Didactics of Literature

Abstract

The article presents the creative biography of Grzegorz Piramowicz and his contribution to the Commission of National Education and emphasises the influence of this activity on the traditions of good education and educational axiology. The sketch is divided into two parts. The first discusses the biography of the Enlightenment Jesuit and his ‘service with the pen’, evidenced by his works, among others: Powinności nauczyciela and Wymowa i poezja dla szkół narodowych. This made it possible to emphasise the role of methodological guides and textbooks in education and upbringing, and to highlight the role of the art of words in education. Piramowicz's significant body of work, including his fundamental treatise Powinności nauczyciela (The Teacher's Obligations), made it possible to draw attention to the timeliness of the work and its importance in contemporary educational discourse. Referring to this statement, the second part of the article discusses the role of axiological education in the perspective of the didactics of literature, including the characteristics of a good teacher, competences, imponderables and the influence of selected readings on the recognition, understanding and respect of values (on the example of the interpretation of Zbigniew Herbert's poem, Potęga smaku [The Power of Taste]). In the conclusion, several postulates were formulated, emphasising that school education and the education of students - apart from developing skills and acquiring knowledge - should serve the purpose of education and take into account the ethical dimension of thinking.
