What Do Biographical Monographs Teach Us, and why Do We So Readily Reach for Them?

Abstract

The article is an attempt to answer the question about the sources of readerly curiosity in the case of reaching for biographical monographs. This popular genre of literature, but also the object of research (a scientific biography) enjoys undying popularity, which raises the question about the essence of the pleasure derived by the reader (and in the case of a scientist, about the research problems he poses to a biography). The catalogue of possible answers is too wide to present a comprehensive solution to the research problem outlined in this way in a single text. However, the text characterizes several key inspirations that their readers seem to seek in biographies. The reminiscences presented in the text arose, among others, on the basis of broader research on the biographies of outstanding people, which the author described in detail in the book publication.

Keywords:
