Sergiusz Hessen i Nicholas Hans

Common Life Experiences and Pedagogical Views

Abstract

The paper presents the biographies of two representatives of 20th-century comparative education: Sergiusz Hessen and Nicholas Hans. It also refers to their research projects, with particular emphasis on a monograph on education in Soviet Russia from 1917 to 1932. The aim of the study is to bring up the life paths of both scholars, in particular those biographical details that reveal certain similarities in their life experiences, including their politically forced emigration. Their book in turn is not only a comprehensive compendium of knowledge about the education system under Bolshevik rule, but also an illustration of a situation in which ideology and the current political course become factors determining the role of education. The article uses content analysis based on archival sources located in the United States and Great Britain. It also refers to the relevant literature, including works unavailable in Polish.
