Priest Jerzy Popiełuszko in the School History Textbooks

Abstract

The presented study aims to reconstruct the discourse of biographical narratives of Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko in the school history textbooks (1991–2022). The study was guided by the qualitative approach and the critical discourse analysis (CDA) of both verbal and visual texts to explore the values and ideologies embedded in the textbook narratives of Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko. The analysis reveals that school textbooks are dominated by the strategy of martyrdom, where national heroism is not the subject of agency. The newer textbooks – published after 2012 – started portraying Popiełuszko as an essential political actor.

The shift beyond the morality dimension into axiological-identification, towards values, beliefs, and actions of Popiełuszko, which the learners can identify with, is observed.  Heroic biographies are crucial for internalizing values and principles of national citizenship.
