Maciej Bernasiewicz’s work primarily acknowledges the role and place of "significant others" in shaping identity, but also in the "inheritance" of passions, hopes, feelings, and resentments of individuals recognized as outstanding. The author demonstrates the role and significance of the family environment, which he considers exceptionally important, perhaps even a priority, in determining the development of talent and genius. This book is about people who, as the author describes, were able to multiply the talent entrusted to them many times over, but it also explores the individuals without whom these talents would not have been so significant. The author undertook a research effort to study the biographies of twenty exceptionally talented Polish individuals whose achievements were recognized as outstanding, and identifies the biographical determinants of their development, with particular emphasis on the role of parents and significant others. In this publication, the author successfully revives Erikson’s concept of the generative parent, providing a space for contemporary reflection on the multifaceted nature of "life-giving" parenting.
