The Hard Life of Gentle Scientist Piotr Bohdan Krypiakiewicz

Abstract

This article is dedicated to Piotr Bohdan Krypiakiewicz (1923–1980), who was one of the founders of the school of crystal chemistry at the University of Lviv) and the son of an outstanding Ukrainian historian. Throughout his scientific life he strugg led with the eff ects of the then incurable disease (poliomyelitis) from which he suffered during his studies. Although he was seriously ill, he graduated from university, defended his doctorate and made a habilitation. He worked at the university, where he conducted a diploma seminar, and held meetings with students at home. He cared about the level of education, supported the young, read, edited monographs and papers on crystal chemistry and crystallography and published research results in journals. Moreover, he was very noble, cheerful and never showed anyone how much he was suffering.
