Hagiography and Monastic Biographies of the Polish Discalced Carmelite Nuns in the 17TH Century

Sources, Narratives, Interpretations

Abstract

The object of research interest in this article is the milieu of the Polish nuns of the seventeenth century, the Discalced Carmelite nuns, and their writings with a special focus on hagiographical and monastic biographical writings. These literary fields are part of the more widely understood Baroque women's writing which has not been completely explored so far. The subject matter of the monastic writings, especially of female orders, is extremely interesting. This is not only because of the quality of texts that are still being discovered but also because of the extremely hermetic environment in which these texts came to existence and the closed, extremely limited circulation of manuscript works, it being a case for an overwhelming majority of them. For the purposes of the present study, the first part of the study presents the process of creating and using hagiographies in a Carmelite monastery while the second part employs two hagiographic texts to exemplify the theses raised herein.
