Natalia Han-Ilgiewicz was a Polish special educator who dedicated her professional and academic career to the rehabilitation of juveniles. She was the author of innovative, for her times, rehabilitation projects - colonies near Lake Baikal, or "Reymontówka." She gained experience both in her home country, working with morally neglected youth, and by traveling across Europe and observing the rehabilitation of juveniles in places like Switzerland, England, Belgium, and Italy.
She emphasized the importance of diagnosis and a deep understanding of the child for the success of rehabilitative interventions. She prioritized education over punishment, which was the primary "method of intervention" towards children at that time.
For many years, she worked at the State Institute of Special Pedagogy, founded by Maria Grzegorzewska, where she taught students, among other things, juvenile criminology. She authored numerous scientific works, the message of which remains relevant to this day. Her contributions are worth recalling, especially due to the fact that Natalia Han-Ilgiewicz lived and worked during challenging post-war times. Along her path, she encountered children affected by war orphans, traumatized children, and those suffering due to poverty. Her experiences can prove to be valuable, especially in the face of conflict beyond our eastern border.
