Kindness First or Good Manners According to Jan Kamyczek

Abstract

Jan Kamyczek is the pseudonym of Janina Ipohorska, a writer who, during the communist period, became an oracle of savoir-vivre for Poles. She disseminated her knowledge on the subject in the weekly magazine Przekrój and in books such as Grzeczność na co dzień. In this article, I remind her and the cultural and social context in which she worked, but above all I draw attention to the revolutionary change that she brought about in thinking about savoir-vivre after the war. According to Jan Kamyczek, the essence of good manners is not rigid bon ton rules, but mutual kindness between people. Kamyczek's style of advice also differs significantly from her predecessors. She treats her readers as partners, more like friends whom she wants to advise sincerely, with a sense of humour, than students whom she should instruct harshly. This has certainly not gone unnoticed as her books have sold hundreds of thousands of copies.
