Father Edward Nitka – Local Community and Folk Art Animator

Abstract

The presented article presents the work of Father Edward Nitka, which was the development of the creative activity of the residents of Paszyn. The pastoral work in this parish resulted in the creation of a unique folk art center, where at its peak over 120 amateur artists created their work. The priest's involvement led to the discovery of sculpting talent among the residents, which, thanks to Father Nitka's efforts, developed on an unprecedented scale. In the 1960s and 1970s, Paszyn became a phenomenon that amazed both researchers and collectors of amateur art from Poland and abroad, and the works of local artists ended up in numerous museums and private collections. For many years, Father Nitka documented the development of the artistic movement in the parish, keeping the Chronicle of the exhibition of Paszyn talent, which is currently a valuable source of knowledge about this interesting phenomenon. Thanks to his charisma and commitment, the priest became an animator of local folk art, and his activities can be analyzed today both from the perspective of the animation of the local community and the development of such phenomena in Polish art as Art Brut.
