Teodor Iljaszewicz (1910-1948)
A Biography of a Poet, National Activist and Pedagogue
Abstract
The figure of Teodor Iljaszewicz is permanently inscribed in the history of the Republic of Belarus and its national movement, especially from the 1990s, when the independent Republic of Belarus was established. His name found its place in encyclopedias and biographical dictionaries. He is presented as a Belarusian poet, prose writer, historian, journalist and socio-cultural activist. What is omitted is his basic profession as a teacher and educator, which was not only his main source of livelihood, but also a passion and vocation. His activities in the field of Belarusian education, both pedagogical and organizational, deserve a separate interest. It is after graduation that he devoted himself completely to it. Regardless of the circumstances, he tried to educate Belarusian youth in their mother tongue. In the Second Polish Republic in the years 1934-1937 he taught the Belarusian language at the Vilnius Belarusian Grammar School and at the Orthodox Seminary in Vilnius. In the years 1939-1941 and 1941-1944 he organized Belarusian education in the Białystok region, and in the years 1944-1948, in the emigration circles in post-war Germany, he taught children and youth, published textbooks, organized scouting and YMCA. A holistic view on the life and work of Teodor Iljaszewicz shows how important in his life was educational activity, it can even be said that he treated it as a priority, while the literary and scientific work was its complement.
