Marriage and Family in the Works of Kazimierz Bisztyga SJ (1869–1938)

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to reconstruct Kazimierz Bisztyga's views on marriage and family based on selected texts published in “Catholic Voices” – a high-circulation periodical which was published from 1900 until the outbreak of World War II. During this period, the process of laicization initiated mainly in Western European countries, especially in France, is taking place. In independent Poland, secularization processes were evident in efforts to create a secular school. Kazimierz Bisztyga, a Jesuit publicist at the time, saw a great danger in the efforts to create a non-denominational school. The process of secularization was also permeating the institution of marriage through the introduction of civil weddings and allowing divorce. So Bisztyga undertook work to raise awareness of the threat to Catholic families from these two sources: a secular school without religious instruction and without religious practices, and civil weddings and the possibility of divorce. In response to these threats, Bisztyga gave an interpretation of the Christian understanding of marriage and family. He included them in brochures:  Małżeństwo, Rozwody and Upominek dla rodzin..
