Abstract

Jadwiga Szczawińska (1864–1910), the wife of Jan Władysław Dawid, a prominent psychologist of the turn of the centuries (among other things, the author of the first Polish test for examining children’s intelligence), probably played the greatest role in the launch of her husband’s political activity. Szczawińska was, among other things, a teacher of the Polish language and literature, educator, founder of self-educating clubs, spokesperson for higher education for women, the founder of the Flying University, an initiator of founding the Public Library in Warsaw, a founder, editor and columnist of cultural and educational periodicals. Her tragic death stopped a rich, passionate and devoted life of a woman who can be an example of a native social and educational activist of the turn of the centuries.
