Jan Bołoz Antoniewicz: An Armenian with a Polish Heart

Abstract

The article features a biography and discusses the intellectual achievements of art historian Jan Bołoz Antoniewicz, a patriot of the land he lived in. Prof. Antoniewicz had Armenian origins, he was born in Skomorochy near Buczacz. Poland became his second homeland. His ancestors had come to Poland fleeing persecution. His gratitude to Polish society and search for a connection to the Armenian nation can be traced in his academic writings and journalism. In addition to Italian art, he undertook intensive research on Polish art, educating future scholars at the University of Lemberg. He was esteemed by his fellow university professors and the Polish elite alike.
