‘Homeland is a Great Collective Duty’

Dimensions and Paths of Patriotism of Polish National Heroes

Abstract

The article aims to show patriotism using selected examples of characters considered to be Polish heroes (Prince Józef Poniatowski, Jan Henryk Dąbrowski, Jarosław
Dąbrowski, Romuald Traugutt, Maria Skłodowska-Curie, the Generation of Columbuses, women over the centuries) and to characterise the types and faces of this patriotism. It is important to analyse decisions made by individuals/groups, their circumstances and determinants, as well as to indicate the path leading to their final choices.
The effects and criteria of this patriotism are also significant. The article aims to indicate who, when, under what circumstances and why became a Polish national hero and to indicate the place of Poland and patriotism against the background of the heroes’ life path.
