Pedagogical Contexts of the Work and Activity of Edith Stein

Abstract

Born into a Jewish family, Edith Stein (1891–1942) is one of the most intriguing women of the 20th century. A philosopher and author of numerous scholarly and spiritual texts, a grammar school teacher and a convert to Catholicism, she joined the Discalced Carmelite Order in Cologne in 1933 to live an enclosed life. As a result of the anti-Jewish policies of the Nazi government of the Reich, Stein found herself in exile in the Netherlands. Arrested on August 2nd, 1942 in the monastery in Echt, Edith Stein was murdered in the Auschwitz gas chamber on August 9th that year. The German Carmelite nun who was raised to the altars of the Catholic Church has so far been the first Jewish woman saint, beatified and canonised by Pope John Paul II. In 1999, Edith Stein was declared one of the three women patron saints of Europe (together with St. Brigid of Sweden and St. Catherine of Siena). This article collects the most important biographical aspects of Edith Stein and connects them with her philosophical work, referring to the categories of empathy, the person, social relationships, and education. Theoretical reflections are complemented by references to the professional experience of St. Edith Stein on the ground of Catholic education in the German Reich.
