Health Status of Women after Breast Reconstruction Surgery – Socio-pedagogical Approach

Abstract

The experience of chronic illness goes beyond the dichotomous division of people into healthy and sick. In the light of Arthur Frank's concept, there is an intermediate zone defined as a society of remission, whose citizens no longer struggle with the symptoms of the disease and are not treated, but at the same time live with the awareness of the possibility of reccurence. The remission society includes people after completed oncological treatment. The aim of the research was to determine the health status of women after breast reconstructive surgery from the perspective of women who underwent it. Biographical research was carried out using an autobiographical narrative interview. 13 women participated in the research. As a result of the analysis of narratives, it was found that assigning meanings to the breast reconstruction procedure by the patient is related to the way of interpreting the diagnosis of breast cancer in the context of one's own biography and the surgical treatment and its consequences. Breast reconstruction surgery helps in dealing with the trauma of the disease, with self-acceptance, with functioning in various social situations, but usually it does not close a certain chapter in the biography and does not allow to return to the world of healthy people. However, for three particippants it initiated a change in the perception of the health status.
