The Activity of Ignacy Świrski in Vilnius
Abstract
Fr. Ignacy Świrski, PhD, started to work at the Faculty of Theology of the Stefan Batory University (SBU) in Vilnius, which was reactivated in 1921 after Poland regained independence. He studied at the Gregorianum University in Rome and gained teaching experience at the Theological Academy in St. Petersburg. He taught moral theology and many other subjects and published works in the field of comparative studies of issues concerning the moral theology of the Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church and moral theology relating to ideas discussed at that time.
He was distinguished by his involvement in the organisational work of the university. During 18 years of work at the university, he served as dean for almost 11 years. He spoke on matters determining the functioning of the Faculty of Theology. He represented the university during important patriotic events, such as the bringing of Joachim Lelewel’s ashes to Vilnius and the funeral of Józef Piłsudski. He devoted a lot of time to the academic community. He was the curator of student organisations, The Sodality of Our Lady society of SBU Academics and Polish Academic Corporation ‘Concordia Vilnensis’, and a member of ‘Kółko’ [Circle], an informal discussion group of SBU employees and students. Fr. Professor Świrski was also associated with the Archdiocese of Vilnius. He was the director of the Institute of Higher Culture, lectured in pastoral courses for the clergy of the Archdiocese of Vilnius and was involved in academic chaplaincy. After the university was liquidated, he lectured at the Theological Seminary of the secretly operating Faculty of Theology. In 1945, he left Vilnius. In 2018, the first public session initiating the beatification process of Ignacy Świrski took place in Siedlce.
