: Intentionally created material spaces of memory connected with the past of a given group are not only one of the components of its cultural memory, but they also take part in the process of permanent (re)construction of this memory by creating conditions for learning it. Following Maurice Halbwachs, it can be assumed that individual ‘acts of memory’ that constitute the (auto)definition building blocks depend on socially institutionalized memory contents selected by groups that particular individuals belong to. Therefore, the examination of academic semiophores allows one to map the academic collective memory and identify characteristics of that memory as well as of the institution, the identity of which is based on and created by that memory. It thus defines frameworks of thinking and acting of individuals who are connected with it. For that reason, the subject of the paper is semiophores related to the past of Vilnius University i.e. objects that a given community recognizes as carriers of meanings and values that combine a semiotic dimension and a material dimension, and therefore objects that by definition should act as sites of memory. The paper presents the results of the ethnographic study, based on the analysis and interpretation of data collected thanks to (auto) observation and searching through the secondary sources, focused around the questions, such as: What is the nature of semiophores located at Vilnius University? What is the importance of semiophores in architectural, social, cultural and educational spaces of Vilnius University?, The research carried out allows to conclude that the University of Vilnius is characterized by a responsible approach to commemorating its past and constructing the framework of collective memory, in which specific biographical processes take place, but also that the collection of the University of Vilnius' semiophores is characterized by the homogeneity of the scope of commemorated entities, which has its educational implications.
