Cieszyn Silesia As a Place of Pedagogical and Social Activity of Jan Śliwka
Abstract
This study is focused on the activity of Jan Śliwka (1823-1874), an educator and social activist in Cieszyn Silesia – the region which in the 19th century was the space and place that largely affected the biography of the presented figure. The multiculturalism and multireligiousness of the place became an impulse for work aimed at education and the local community. What has been presented in the study is Jan Śliwka’s family environment, his pedagogical work and his merits and contribution to the elaboration of school coursebooks for children and youth. Moreover, some selected aspects of Jan Śliwka’s religious activity associated with the phenomenon of the discussed place have been brought closer.
