"Turning" points in the biography of Wanda Malczewska

Abstract

The biography of Wanda Malczewska (1822-1896) fits well into the history of Polish spirituality in the second half of the 19th century. She was a doctor and teacher, as well as an apostle and evangelizer. With her attitude, she ideally followed the example of a Christian woman who treats life in terms of service to God and her fellow men. At the age of 50, Wanda received the gift of mystical visions and prophecy of future events, mainly concerning the fate of Poland, Russia and the Church. The first vision took place on April 28, 1872, on the fourth Sunday of Easter, in the church in Żytno. During the visions, she directly participated in the Passion of the Lord. That is why she was called the Polish Anna Katarzyna Emmerich. The emotional states that Wanda fell into are the result of her difficult, painful life experiences, historical events such as the January Uprising, severe illness and homelessness combined with loneliness. They can be considered special "turning points" in her biography, which influenced her attitude towards life and spirituality, which from the perspective of the philosophy of dialogue, and especially the concept of Martin Buber, can be treated as building a personal relationship with Christ in a mystical union. Wanda Malczewska had the courage to follow her own life path - a spiritual vocation and become a visionary and mystic.
