The Experience of War – A Turning Point in the Biography of "Tourist" 6252

Abstract

The text is an analysis of the front diary of corporal Zygmunt Kucharz (soldier 6252) fighting in the 1st Regiment of Motor Artillery under the command of General Stanisław Maczek. The handwritten war diary is the only account written by a private soldier known in the literature of the subject. It presents an image of the destruction of man and his world by the conflagration of war. It shows the irreversible transformation of a young man, at the beginning of the best years of his life, full of hope, into an insignificant pawn, an identification number whose existence defined the sense of defeat. A defeated and destroyed prisoner living here and now without expectations in his homeland occupied by the USSR.
