Maria Chomentowska: Student and Master

A Biographical Study with Focus on Two Key Transitions

Abstract

The text centers around two important aspects within the biography of one of Poland's most famous industrial designers - Maria Chomentowska. The first turning point, defining her entire future professional career, was the decision to abandon her studies in the field of painting and enroll in Prof. Jan Kurzątkowski's studio at the Department of Interior Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. It was largely dictated by disagreement with the didactic methods applied at the department during that time. The article considers the artist's interest in issues of design for children and adolescents as the second turning point. The very idea of design focused on the young user was a novelty at the time and aligned with research on the psychology of child and adolescent development, the results of which proved the relationship between well-being and intellectual development, and the learning and working environment. It allowed Maria Chomentowska to create numerous innovative projects that were part of the new trend of creating work- and study-friendly spaces. Examples of realizations maintained in this manner include furniture for children's rooms, school desks, and, in a broader context, the unique interior design of the Catholic University of Lublin. The text analyzes Maria Chomentowska's biography in terms of two decisive moments that marked a breakthrough in her career and influenced subsequent generations of industrial form designers.
