The aim of the article is a partial reconstruction of the biography of the 19th-century painter and copyist Klemens Rodziewicz based on his letters to Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. Meeting the outstanding writer was a turning point in the hero's life and determined his entire later life. The collection of correspondence that is the subject of the analysis consists of 137 letters written by Rodziewicz to the author Kraszewski in the period from October 1858 to March 1881. The analysis of the letters made it possible to show Rodziewicz as a brilliant man, endowed with a sense of humor, a sharp tongue, distance to himself and reality. Thanks to his connections with Kraszewski, he associated with representatives of the then Polish émigré elite. His perseverance and diligence made him a recognizable figure. Staying abroad was conducive to his professional development and social advancement, and he owed it all to Kraszewski, his benefactor, curator, patron, client and friend, with whom he had known for nearly 30 years and in his own way appreciated and respected, calling himself his servant.
