Christel Schubert and Monika Szymanik - a Meeting with the History of Szczecin in the Background

From Memory of a Lost Place to Post-Memory of a Multiple Land

Abstract

Through the two types of memory mentioned in the title of the article, I want to focus attention on the city of Szczecin as a meeting place of various cultural influences visible in its space. I take as a starting point for my analysis the concept of the borderland as a multiple land and the issue of collective identity, as well as the influence of scientific and colloquial discourse on their constitution. I discuss the discursive nature of memory of a lost place and post-memory of a multiple land from two perspectives that are important for linguistic reflection. From the perspective of someone who remembers – the subject, object and narrative of memory, and from the perspective of the recipient and observer of the transmitted content of memory - the formation of identity in integration with the history of the occupied space.
