Professors of Pedagogy and Psychology at Universities of the Second Polish Republic

Chairs of Pedagogy and Psychology were present at each of the six Polish interwar universities. Their specific profiles and nomenclatures were usually inconsistent. This article presents a group portrait of the professors who headed those chairs. There were 16 such scientists (Stefan Baley, Zygmunt Bielawski, Stefan Błachowski, Ludwik Chmaj, Antoni Danysz, Ludwik Jaxa-Bykowski, Stanisław Kobyłecki, Mieczysław Kreutz, Zygmunt Bolesław Kukulski, Stanisław Łempicki, Marian Massonius, Zygmunt Mysłakowski, Bogdan Nawroczyński, Bogdan Suchodolski, Stefan Szuman and Władysław Witwicki). Compared with other professorial chairs, the interwar professors of pedagogy and psychology were a representative group. They were often educated at more than one university and progressed through the stages of their scientific and professional career in typical circumstances. However, some areas distinguished this group. Most of all, their educational, scientific and professional foundation consisted of an exceptionally wide range of fields of study. Before heading a professorial chair, in addition to pedagogy and/or psychology, most of them had usually studied other, unrelated disciplines. Therefore many of them should be considered interdisciplinary researchers.
