Aniela Maria Aleksandrowiczówna (1866-1946) Public Activity

Sketch for a Portrait of an Educational Activist

Abstract

Aniela Aleksandrowiczówna was an active Polish educational activist. She combined her professional work in education with social activity. It should be stated without undue exaggeration that there was no organization, association or educational institution at that time in which it would not have marked its participation (Teachers Union, Polish Pedagogical Society, National Delegation of Teachers Societies, People’s School Society, People’s Education Society, Folk School Society). She spoke about the Polonization of education in the Austrian partition many times, and taking advantage of her autonomous freedoms, she effectively implemented this president in practice. She represented the professional interests of the teaching community, incl. preparing petitions to the National Parliament. While sitting on the board of the Polish School Museum, she strove to equip schools with teaching aids. She was active in social associations (Fund Burs Polskich, Towarzystwo “Ochrony Młodzieży”, PCK) and women’s associations (Union of Polish Christian Women’s Societies, Society Against Trafficking in Girls, Society of Holiday Camps for Girls), striving to create jobs as part of the “women’s industry” . She showed significant journalistic activity. During World War I and the fights for independence, she participated in actions to support the Polish soldier (Committee for the Care of the Polish Soldier, Society of Homes for War Disabled). She was involved in helping the poor and children (Polish Committee “Children in the Country”). In 1919-1927, she was a member of the Provisional City Council of Lviv. She was politically connected with the national camp. This sketch is based on archival and published source materials, widely used press, memoirs (memoirs) and scientific studies.
