This article presents the Ursuline of the Agonizing Heart of Jesus, Sister Brygida Rodziewicz, who was a student and close associate of Saint Ursula Ledóchowska.
She was born as Zoe Rodziewicz on 1 May 1885 in Ashgabat, Russia, in the family of a former January insurgent, engineer Zygmunt Rodziewicz, and Małgorzata née Stulgińska. She gained her first education at home, where she learned foreign languages. She then studied at the St Catherine Catholic High School in St Petersburg and then in Krakow, where Ursula Ledóchowska took care of her. Close contact with the teacher and tutoress contributed to her spiritual development. At that time, her teaching talent was revealed. She showed a dedicated initiative in educating young orphans. As soon as she had finished school, she started to work as a teacher at the St Catherine Catholic High School in St Petersburg.
She made her vows on 15 August 1920. She devoted her entire life to serving God and the needy – she was always sensitive to the harm and needs of her neighbours, and was also courageous, cordial, caring and devoted. She taught and raised young girls in Poland and abroad, mainly on missions in France. She was also the head and superior of Ursuline institutions, including in Vilnius, Sieradz and Pniewy.
She died of cancer that had developed after eight years of her activity as the Superior General of the Congregation. She showed courage and faith in God to the end. She died on 21 August 1955 at the hour of the Marian call, surrounded by sisters’ prayers. She was buried in the congregation’s cemetery in Pniewy.
