Heroes about heroes. From Old Polish war memories (selected examples)

Abstract

This paper is constructed of two layers. The first one is built upon real people from 17th and 18th century (i.e., Wespazjan Kochowski, Jan Karol Chodkiewicz, Maria Ludwika Gonzaga, the Bar Confederates) who can be considered heroes mainly due to their participation in the war. Second layer is created by those whom these historical figures indicate as their heroes. These are primarily people associated with combat, including kings, war chiefs, soldiers, wife, Mary, God, mythical and historical figures contemporary to the authors.
The basis for creating the notion of “heroes of the heroes” is a variety of messages about Early Modern Period in Poland. These are both historical sources as well as literary works, which can be treated as a core of historian’s work. They include poetry and prose, historiography and epistolography. This paper also uses historical fiction which is important for the functioning of social consciousness.
The life and work of the heroes – historical figures and their written utterances are also directly or indirectly related to war and struggle, which are one of the most important determinants of Polish foreign and home affairs at that time and an important element of the Old Polish culture.
