‘Tamara Łempicka: A Woman on a Journey’

A Museum Exhibition as an Example of Communication Design and a Carrier of Biographical Education

Abstract

This article presents the biography of Tamara Łempicka in the context of the first exhibition of the painter’s works in Poland organised by the National Museum in Lublin in 2022. The author analyses the communication design used at the exhibition, which presents not only the painter’s works but also the art deco epoch, the daily life and artists living in the 1920s and 1930s. The cultural, social and biographical communicative contexts in which Tamara Łempicka was presented are subject to analysis. The author assesses the effectiveness of the message in the context of the adopted narrative, scenography and compositional solutions.
Łempicka’s artistic and communication, aspirations aimed at promoting her image and creating her brand are analysed. The famous Łempicka painting entitled Self-Portrait in the Green Bugatti, which played a triple communicative role, can serve as an example. On the one hand, it was used on the cover of an influential fashion magazine, Die Dame. On the other, it served as an advertisement of the Bugatti brand. Finally, the article emphasises the role of the model – the author of the painting – and her self-creation effort, which consisted of placing the initials ‘TL’ just above the car handle, in the place where the key was inserted.
The author attempts to explain the communicative success of Łempicka’s brand and the unflagging interest in her person and art by revealing details from her life and examining how the museum communicated this phenomenon
