The Role of Social Support in Intercultural Integration

Stories of Migrants During the COVID-19 Pandemic as Testimony of Transgressive Biographies

Abstract

In this article, I present stories of migrants during the pandemic, which are an example of transgressive biographies: those in which heroes found themselves in crisis situations managed to find themselves again, discover their potential and new areas of activity. I show how the social support received and given by migrants during the pandemic influenced the process of their acculturation. Migrants who, instead of support, met with distance and attacks, chose separation and marginalization strategies. For those who received support, it became an impulse to transgress towards intercultural integration, and even expanding it from the plane of private relations to the sphere of public activities. Receiving social support was a transgressive moment in their biographies. Some references to Stanisław Kawula’s concept of the spiral of kindness can be found here. According to it, a person in a crisis situation can develop and transgress when he or she receives social support as an impulse, which not only contributes to solving the crisis situation, but also triggers activity and agency in the individual, it is a catalyst for their actions, self-development and self-upbringing.
