Abstract

The life of Ludwika Maria Róża Chodkiewicz née Rzewuska has been described by historians. She was not involved in serious politics, and her diverse activities were focused mainly on the family, family assets and her interests. This article aims to present her family activities, using source materials from the Młynów Archive, kept in the National Archives in Krakow.

This article examines her life in her family home in Podhorce. It describes her relationship with her mother and her special closeness with her father, Wacław. An attempt is made to recount her education, which influenced Rzewuska’s later interests. The next stage of Ludwika Maria’s life was her marriage to the starost of Samogitia, Jan Mikołaj Chodkiewicz. Their wedding took place in January 1766 and they were married until the starost died in 1781. The growing family lived in Chernobyl, and then in the palace in Młynów, built after the starost’s death. Chodkiewicz had seven children, two of whom died in early childhood, and her first-born son, Wacław, did not live to see his eighteenth birthday. The parents cared about the proper education of their children, particularly their sons, who were sent one by one to Warsaw, where they studied in Marcin Nikuta’s private school and prepared for their future duties. Ludwika Maria was a very caring and demanding mother who could not stand it when someone did not agree with her and did not allow her children to make their own decisions. She tried to influence their lives even when they were adults. She did this all for the sake of the Chodkiewicz family.
