Participation of Polish Medical Doctors in the Cooperation and Integration of Slavic Medical Communities (1881–1914)

Abstract

This article presents the activities of Polish physicians in the field of cooperation and integration of Slavic medical communities until 1914. Initially, the cooperation involved only Polish and Czech scholars, later it was extended to other nations (e.g. Serbs, Russians, Croats, Bulgarians). The analysis covers both the role and contribution of Polish doctors to the process of co-operation of Slavic medical scientists, as well as activities aimed at obtaining the right of national representation at international medical congresses and conventions, with the possibility of using the national (mother tongue). In addition, multifaceted scientific cooperation between representatives of medical sciences from Slavic countries and nations, activities aimed at establishing joint Slavic (medical) committees, were shown. However, the demands raised and specific institutional forms of cooperation between Slavic physicians, as well as projects to build their own - national committees for international congresses, encountered opposition from the partitioning states (especially Russia), who feared a revival of national aspirations and a resurgence of independence aspirations. The analysis was based predominantly on internally diverse source material (e.g.: press, memoirs and diaries, published documents). Studies (compact works and scientific articles) played only a supporting role.
