The Modern Woman: Aleksandra Słomińska’s Views Regarding the Role and Tasks of Greater Poland’s Women in the Light of Her 1907–1910 Journalism („Ruch Chrześcijańsko-Społeczny” Publications)

Abstract

The article portrays Aleksandra Słomińska, Poznan-based social activist and educational worker, and her views on the tasks and role of Greater Poland’s (Wielkopolska) women she discussed in “Ruch Chrześcijańsko-Społeczny” in the years 1907–1910. I seek to argue that Słomińska – a figure that has not been highlighted in the literature – was associated with the milieu of community-worker priests and her journalism proposed contents rich enough to describe her as a leader of the women’s Catholic movement that was taking shape in the Poznan province prior to World War 1. In the articles published by the said “Ruch” – a periodical edited and published by the Poznan-based clergy from 1902 to 1910 – she would use the figure of modern woman, in order to persuade the local women to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the Prussian educational system, including its university-level studies offer. The purpose behind such in-depth education was to make middle-class women better prepared: once mothers, they would work on Catholic and national education of the next generation of the Polish nation; as community workers, they would mould the patriotic formation of the lowest social strata, in line with the Catholic social teaching.
