The aim of this article is to provide a synthetic overview of the original threads of Professor Irena Wojnar’s (1924–2021) pedagogical thought, marking the centenary of her birth. The focus lies particularly on her pedagogy of human subjectivity and the integral concept of education through art that embodies its principles, framed within a broader perspective of humanistic education. The analysis is preceded by a brief biographical sketch of one of the most prominent scholars in the field of pedagogical sciences, founder of the Polish school of education through art, a figure whose work has secured a lasting place within the global movement of aesthetic education. Wojnar’s contribution aligns with the European intellectual tradition of reflecting on the human aspect of reality and on subject-oriented actions addressed to the human being. The humanistic pedagogical orientation represented by Irena Wojnar expresses a consistent mode of thinking in terms of the ideals and values of the great movement of European humanism. She further enriched this tradition with original concepts that articulate the duties of education in response to the challenges and threats posed by globalisation and digitalisation in the contemporary world.
An analysis of Wojnar’s humanistic pedagogical thought reveals its enduring relevance, not only in the context of reflections on the development of the internally rich human person, but also in the conviction that the creative potential of the individual is essential for sustaining the world’s creative diversity. This article may serve as a contribution to the crucial ongoing discourse on the condition of pedagogy as a discipline, its distinctiveness and status, and in particular, the importance of incorporating the human (humanistic) dimension into pedagogical research and educational practice.
