General Władysław Anders (1892–1970)

The State of Biographical Research

Abstract

General Władysław Anders is one of the most recognisable Polish historical figures, whose importance goes beyond the status of an outstanding commander of the World War II period. He became a symbol of the great odyssey of Polish soldiers and civilians from the Soviet ‘house of captivity’ through the Middle East to the battles of the Italian campaign, headed by the Battle of Monte Cassino. He is also a figure known to researchers and people fascinated in World War II history outside Poland. This article is a review of scholarly publications devoted to the biography of Anders and is an attempt to answer the question of whether Polish historiography, meets the expectations related to the significance of the historical figure and general interest in his biography.
