The Educational Problems and Opportunities of the Noble Youth in the II Half of the XVIII Century, Based on the Content of Letters of Catherine Narbutt, nee Wiażewicz

Abstract

The article explores the educational challenges faced by young noblemen in the second half of the 18th century from the perspective of the Lithuanian urban and middle-class nobility. It discusses the various educational opportunities available to young noblemen and their impact on their life prospects. The work is based on the letters of Katarzyna Narbutt, née Wiażewicz, which are not included in the research, and on a supplementary text that includes studies addressing issues of eighteenth-century education. The content of the analyzed material allows for an examination of the issue from the perspective of a mother responsible for her offspring's education. She focuses not on theoretical issues or criticism of the current state of affairs, but on the current difficulties inherent in this process. Given the life situation of the author's family and her connections, the source material discussed here presents various educational paths and their close connection to the family's financial situation. The work explores the history of the Narbutt family, its social and financial situation, and the educational background of its members. In this respect, she draws attention to the heredity of education and its impact on the educational prospects of youth of the era. She devotes separate attention to the differences in the education of male and female youth, in light of the goals set for this process. She highlights the difficulties associated with the lack of standardization and uniform teaching methods, which affected youth regardless of gender and wealth. She also points to the specific role of the magnate court in this process. Given the author's connections with the court of the duchy of Adam Kazimierz and Izabela Czartoryski, she attempts to characterize women's education in this environment. She points out that this court was an unrepresentative example compared to other magnate courts nationwide and presents the reasons for this state of affairs. She discusses the process of courtly education for women, using the example of the duchy's daughters and their ladies-in-waiting, the daughters of Katarzyna Narbutt, taking into account the educational methods and methods used. Analysis of the source material provides a starting point for drawing conclusions regarding the connection between the life prospects of young people and the educational path they followed.
