Ablatis litteris, quid mihi mellitius, quam garrire cum amicis meis: Hryhoriy Skovoroda’s Latin Letters to Myhajlo Kovalyn’ski

An Attempt to Approach the Reserach Issues

Abstract

Searching the Truth, prominent Ukrainian thinker Hryhoriy Skovoroda (1722-1794) drew knowledge and inspiration from the ancient culture. His fascination with antiquity led him to translate from Latin and Greek, as well as create his own writings and even correspond with his closest friend, Mykhailo Kovalynsky, in these languages. Skovoroda's letters are a kind of ethics manual. The letters prove author's education, the nobility of his attitude, as well as his burning desire to find answers to questions about the essence of humanity, which he also seeks in the writings of various Greek and Roman writers authors.
