Seduced by the „Security”
Turning Points in Biography on the Example of Selected Figures from the Communist Security Apparatus
Abstract
The communist security apparatus had a rich arsenal of means for recruiting its cadres. From various types of privileges and incentives of a material nature, through winning personal ambitions, to intimidation and the threat of repression. These measures, skillfully applied, made it possible to recruit candidates for its officers even from among people who had previously had a negative attitude towards the communist rule and the ideology it represented. The subject of the article is five different cases of this type of turning points in biography, occurring in different periods of the history of „People's Poland” and analyzed to illustrate the recruitment mechanisms of the security apparatus.
