The Use of Autobiographical Narrative Interview in the Study of Experiences of Prisoners' Families

Abstract

In this article I focused on the issue of autobiographical narrative interviews among families of prisoners. A research project on the biographical experiences of prisoners' families allowed me to verify the usefulness of the biographical method. In the first part of the article, I introduced the theoretical and methodological perspective. I characterized the key features of Fritz Schütze's biographical sociology. Then, in the central part of the paper I focused on the structural analysis of biographical narratives and presented the author's methodological insights on the usefulness of the initial phases of the interview. Based on 60 autobiographical narrative interviews, I presented the meaning of the first part of the autobiographical story. I characterized the narrators' storytelling style, language structure and metaphors used to illustrate the problem.
