Communication Skills of a Person with Hearing Impairment and Her Life Perspectives

Abstract

The aim of this article is to describe, based on the case study of a person with hearing impairment, the factors that determine the development of her communication skills in the course of her life and the role they play in shaping her life prospects in the area of education, professional and family life. In order to achieve the goal, the first part of this article describes the development, upbringing and education of the examined person from birth to university graduation, with particular emphasis on the aspect of speech and communication development. This is followed by the description of the results of a study which was conducted during an undergraduate course using five survey instruments designed to assess and self-assess communication skills, feelings of satisfaction with communication, and feelings of identification with the hearing or deaf community. The analysis of these data has made it possible to formulate conclusions about the role of life experiences and communication skills in building one’s own identity and creating one's own life perspectives.
