A Biography of the Scholar

The Life of the Rev. Professor Luigi Chiarini (1789-1832)

Abstract

The aim of the study is to present the Rev. Professor L. Chiarini (1789-1832), an Italian priest, Hebrew scholar and Judaist, who initiated the translation of the Talmud into the French language and who intended to carry out the reform of Judaism.

The study consists of two main parts. Part One presents his biography, including his youth, with special reference to his education in Tuscany, obtaining the job at the University of Warsaw, his successful efforts for a professorship, his expert activity in the Warsaw Society of the Friends of Science, as well as his scientific achievements. Part Two presents the involvement of the Rev. L. Chiarini in the work on the reform of Judaism which he had planned earlier, and the resulting edition of a two-volume work entitled Théorie du Judaïsme,  as well as the beginning of his work on the French translation of the Talmud, which - in his opinion - was the source of evil and corruption in Judaism. The study also presents the reaction of the Jewish community and its sharp criticism of the Rev. Chiarini’s activity.
