An Outline for Bogdan Nawroczyński’s Pedagogical Biography
Abstract
The present text has been inspired by a desire once expressed by the eminent Polish pedagogue Bogdan Nawroczyński that more autobiographies would be written in Poland to explore the educational experiences of their authors. Nawroczyński alone has left an extensive body of memoirs written towards the end of his life, entitled Wspomnieniach starego pedagoga (“Recollections of an old pedagogue”). This piece of writing was used here to provide an outline of a pedagogical biography – that is, a biography that focuses on finding the answer to the following question: what people, situations, phenomena, subjects, objects and institutions played a significant role in the life of a specific individual – in this case, an eminent scholar – by supporting his or her development; and how did certain factors became of significance for educational acts and the educational process throughout their lives? This text is structured around one of the core theses postulated by Stefan Kunowski’s theory of educational development, according to which the core forces driving this process are: 1) bios – as the force of biopsychological development potential; 2) etos – as the force of social pressure; 3) agos – as the force of conscious educational presence oriented towards materialising the world of values; 4) los (fate) – as the force that provides a connection between events beyond a man’s control and a creative and responsible commitment to self-formation.
