‘African Diary’: Characteristics of the Collection of Letters by Janina Bartkiewicz from 1965–1975

Abstract

This article contains an analysis of the collection of letters by Janina Bartkiewicz, written to her friends in Poland during her stay in Uganda from 1965–1975 and preserved at the Museum of Scouting in Warsaw. The discussion of the collection also addresses two published editions of the letters, released in 2000 and 2018. The text presents the circumstances surrounding their publication, highlighting differences between the printed version and the manuscript collection. Bartkiewicz’s letters are further characterised in terms of form and content, indicating their specificity and research value, as well as their potential for preserving the memory of their author.
