The article addresses the marginalization of Władysław Jarocki’s work within the canon of twentieth-century Polish art history, framing it in the context of cultural memory theory and contemporary approaches to the construction of the art canon. Drawing on the concepts of Aleida Assmann, Astrid Erll, John Guillory, and Georges Didi-Huberman, reconstructs mechanisms of selective remembrance and forgetting that shaped Jarocki’s reception in narratives of modern art. Jarocki – an artist, pedagogue, and cultural organizer – represents a particularly complex case: though rooted in the experience of modernism, his art has been reduced to ethnographic painting. The article interprets this phenomenon as a consequence of epistemological and ideological conditions of Polish art history, where the construction of the canon has simultaneously functioned as a political act and an act of cultural memory.
