Two Paths of Academic Career – a Shared Horizon of University Values. The Epistolary Practices of Czesław Miłosz and Jan Błoński

Abstract

The article presents an analysis of the letters exchanged by Czesław Miłosz and Jan Błoński in 1958–1997. The 39 years of their correspondence constitute a point of reference for identifying the relational value of the academic profession, which is a creative combination of research and teaching activities. The reconstruction of the two writers’ academic careers helps to emphasise the didactic aspect of the world-renowned poet’s biography. This is also a combination of two models of university career (American and Polish). It is worth highlighting that despite their divergent paths of academic advancement, both Miłosz and Błoński became master figures. Moreover, their letters suggest that they followed the same university values in the course of their careers: nurturing the master-apprentice relationships, being attentive to the work of other scholars and establishing a dialogue with them, as well as displaying a creative approach to their own research and teaching work. The author of this paper discovers a new research dimension of letters, which serve as invaluable study materials. For Błoński, who analysed the literary work of Miłosz, their correspondence became a research tool which provided him with an opportunity for holding confession-like, insightful epistolary conversations with the Noble Prize winner.
