Why Study Sociology?

University Education as a Turning Point in the Biographies of Internet Creators

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to answer the question of whether and how studying sociology can be treated as a type of cultural capital and a symbolic biographical resource. On the basis of three selected autobiographical narrative interviews with internet content creators, who have studied sociology in the past, the paper shows what significant – but difficult to measure – benefits come from studying it. The biography of Anastasia, an entertainment content creator, Patryk, who creates content about computer games, and Zbyszek, who publishes about soccer, were analysed for comparative purposes. The results of the study challenge the popular neoliberal belief that higher education should, first and foremost, equip young people with specific qualifications and certain competencies.
